A fascinating self-help method to reduce stress and lose weight.
A fascinating self-help method that could revolutionize your approach to weight loss and emotional well-being.
Welcome to an edition of Wellness Wednesday, your weekly pause to reconnect with your well-being. Today, we're diving into a fascinating self-help method that could revolutionize your approach to weight loss and emotional well-being: Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), or more commonly known as "tapping."
What is EFT?
Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT, is a self-help method for both the mind and body that involves tapping on specific acupuncture points on the hands, face, and body with your fingertips while focusing on a problem you want to address. It's based on the concept that negative emotions can disrupt the body's energy system. By tapping these acupressure points, you can release blockages and restore your energy balance.
The Science Behind EFT
EFT operates on the principles of acupuncture, a practice rooted in traditional Chinese medicine. The idea is that the body has a network of energy channels or meridians connected to various organs. Each meridian has endpoints on the body surface, and by tapping these points, you can access and manipulate your energy flow. This process helps to restructure negative energy patterns and release emotional blockages.
The Benefits of EFT
EFT has been used for a variety of conditions, including (but not limited to):
Weight Loss
Eating Disorders
Stress
Anxiety
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
According to Craig (2011), EFT can help alleviate these issues by addressing the underlying emotional components that contribute to these conditions.
How Does EFT Work?
Imagine your body as a computer that's running slowly because of too many open programs. EFT is like rebooting your system. By tapping on specific points, you help your body release pent-up negative energy, much like closing those extra programs to free up processing power.
Tapping Points
Here are the key points that I enjoy that you can tap during an EFT session:
Top of the Head: Directly on the crown of your head.
Eyebrow Point: Just above the inner edge of your eyebrow.
Side of the Eye: On the bone alongside the outer edge of your eye.
Under the Eye: On the bone just below your eye.
Under the Nose: Between your nose and upper lip.
Chin Point: Midway between your chin and lower lip.
The Tapping Sequence
Identify the Issue: Focus on the problem you want to address.
Rate the Intensity: On a scale of 0 to 10, rate the emotional intensity of the issue.
Setup Statement: While tapping the top of your head, repeat an affirmation three times (e.g., "I am worthy, and I embrace self-care!").
Tapping Sequence: Tap each of the points about 7 times while repeating the affirmation.
Reassess the Intensity: Rate the intensity again to see if it has decreased. Repeat the process if needed.
The Impact of EFT on Health and Well-Being
Physical Benefits
Physically, EFT promotes general relaxation and can reduce areas of physical discomfort and pain. It helps improve sleep quality and establishes better sleeping habits, crucial for weight loss and overall health.
Emotional Benefits
Emotionally, EFT is a powerful tool for letting go of negative emotions such as fear, sadness, guilt, and anger. It aids in healing emotional trauma and reducing emotional weight, which can be significant barriers to weight loss.
Mental Benefits
Mentally, EFT enhances self-esteem, clarity of thought, and positive feelings. It helps resolve phobias and fears, contributing to a peaceful and relaxed state of mind. As Bach et al. (2019) pointed out, the greatest wealth is a peaceful mind and a healthy body, and EFT can help you achieve just that.
Personal Transformation
After practicing EFT, many people experience a profound sense of relief and emotional freedom. They often describe feeling as if they have more room inside, breathing easier, and thinking more clearly (Betty, 2021). EFT can restart your personal energy system, helping you regain balance and feel more relaxed and at peace (Kiara, 2018).
How EFT Can Help Busy Professional Women Lose Weight
For busy professional women, the combination of stress, lack of time, and emotional eating can be significant hurdles in the weight loss journey. EFT addresses these issues by helping you manage stress and emotional triggers.
Reducing Stress and Emotional Eating
Stress is a major contributor to weight gain, often leading to emotional eating. EFT helps reduce stress by calming your nervous system and releasing the emotional blocks that trigger overeating.
Boosting Self-Esteem and Motivation
EFT enhances self-esteem and promotes a positive mindset, crucial for staying motivated on your weight loss journey. By clearing negative self-beliefs, you create a mental environment conducive to achieving your health goals.
Improving Sleep Quality
Better sleep quality is directly linked to weight loss. EFT can help you establish healthier sleeping patterns, ensuring you get the rest you need to support your weight loss efforts.
Getting Started with EFT
Ready to give EFT a try? Here’s a simple exercise to get you started:
Identify a Stressor: Think of something that's causing you stress right now.
Rate the Intensity: On a scale of 0 to 10, rate how intense this stress feels.
Create an affirmation for the stressor: "I am worthy, and I embrace self-care!"
Start Tapping: Follow the tapping sequence outlined above, focusing on your affirmation statement and releasing the stressor.
Reassess: After a few rounds, rate the intensity of your stress again. Repeat if necessary.
